How to avoid burnout on your spiritual journey

How to avoid burnout on your spiritual journey

A spiritual journey isn’t just for spiritual people, because there’s no such thing.

We are all spirit in motion, made manifest in physical form, and so every single human life is spiritual. There is no distinguishing between you and I, we are one in the same.

But some of us choose to engage with the spiritual nature of our existence, and some of us don’t, and it is always the soul’s choice as to how it chooses to align its life in this incarnation.

The spiritual journey isn’t tangible, it can’t be seen, and it feels different to every single person. So many of us are trying to find our way in a world that we don’t quite feel we belong to, and this is probably why you’ve found yourself here, reading this article.

There are so many different layers of existence in other dimensions, realities and universes which can be frightening and reassuring at the same time. And in our efforts to ground into the existence that we’ve chosen, perhaps reluctantly, for this lifetime, it can feel pretty wearying.

I’ve come across a lot of people like me, gentle and sensitive souls, who sometimes feel like they’re longing for a home that they’re not even aware exists.

This might look like finding it hard to fit in, not fitting into friendship groups, feeling isolated, constantly moving around, finding it hard to make a living, not wanting to come out of hiding, but also craving the company of other like-minded souls.

So, I wanted to share a few of the things that I see, with myself and with others, that can play such a key role in our spiritual burnout and how we can take the steps to avoid it.

Burnout and being ungrounded

By our very nature we tend to be ungrounded, with our heads and hearts firmly in the spiritual clouds, which can sometimes cause us to struggle in this earthly life.

In your Soul Contract you have different energies that play out in your life, and the ones that are most connected to this ungrounded and overthinking frequency are the 5’s and the 8’s.

I have both of these in my chart, both in karmic positions, which means I get caught up in the burnout trap way too easily.

The numbers in our Soul Contract are never negative, they are merely there for us to become aware of them, so we can start to activate and transmute them, and start following the spiritual signature of our soul with more grace and ease.

When you have numbers like these in your chart it’s very usual to feel like you don’t quite belong anywhere and it can be a real struggle to get out of our heads and engage with the real world in front of us.

I’ve spoken to many clients with these energies who feel like sometimes they just don’t want to be here, and I totally understand that feeling. The world can seem very harsh when you have such ungrounded, sensitive energies, it’s like the frequency match isn’t aligned, like you landed on the wrong planet.

But you are meant to be here, and your challenge is to embrace this life and find deep joy in it.

The best thing you can do when you’re carrying these numbers in your chart is to ground yourself through being out in nature, connecting to animals, and nurturing the physical body with very earthy, rooted, grounded foods, in order to bring yourself back into the physical body.

Our body is the tool through which we co-create our reality. So, if they’re energetically blocked or physically stagnant with illness, then we need to gently and lovingly nourish them, so that they can become the clear vessels that we need in order to co-create our greatest desires.

When we start to look after ourselves; resting, movement, good food, love, care and attention, we’re able to connect more deeply with ourselves and with the beautiful world around us.

Constantly seeking spiritual expansion

Another common way that we burn out on our spiritual journey is through the endless searching for connection that causes us to drive ourselves unreasonably hard in our efforts to find what we’re looking for.

Three of the most powerful numbers around spiritual self-discovery that can cause so much exhaustion are the 12-3, the 15-6 and the 20-2. All of these energies are seeking growth and spiritual exploration, which can take a real toll on our emotional and physical capacity to handle that much expansion.

Again, I have a double dose of the 12-3’s in my chart which is an energy I love, but it really works me hard! I find that I’m busy, all the time, because my soul is driving me to continually expand.

Perhaps you resonate with the feeling that you’re always needing to seek more in order to grow, almost like you’re not allowed to rest or enjoy the view of how far you’ve come, but you need to keep marching onwards.

It can be an exhausting energy when you’re constantly in a rush, without any rest to really stop and integrate it all. And sometimes we manifest illness in order to slow ourselves down, which is always a warning sign that we’ve pushed things too far.

As much as we have this impatient, burning desire, coming from deep within, that keeps forcing us onwards, we also need to give our emotional and physical bodies the rest they need in order to keep going.

This is a very uncomfortable prospect for someone with these numbers. It’s almost as if it feels unsafe to slow down, let go and relax, and so this is why we avoid it, leading to burnout and exhaustion.

Yet, the energies that push on us to expand and explore are merely an invitation to let go, stop and find stillness within, which will give us all the answers we’re so desperately seeking.

Stillness, rest and space are all the things we need which will allow us to slow ourselves down and allow a recovery of the burnout and fatigue. Just know that it is safe to relax, and when you do so you’ll probably find that you receive far more in this place of leaning back than you would with pushing forwards.

The link between burnout and self love

The last thing that can cause real burnout on the spiritual path is through our journey to self-worth. Ultimately, our search for spiritual connection and worthiness go hand in hand, and can’t be separated.

Ironically, so many of these numbers I’ve mentioned are about connecting to the worthiness within because once we realise that we are already what we’re seeking, then we can relax.

One of the ways in which I’ve experienced burnout is due to a deep subconscious belief that I’m not good enough as I am, and that I need to be better, to do more and to have more.

This is what drives most of us with these perfectionist tendencies. We find it hard to relax because we don’t feel like we deserve to relax. We find it hard to be still with ourselves because we are not yet comfortable with who we truly are.

These are the little clues that often sneak under the surface of our consciousness, yet hold all of the answers.

When we come to a place of pure love for ourselves, we come to a place of pure love, which is spirit in motion. Love is God and God is love. They cannot be separated.

So the spiritual journey you’re on, is really a journey to love.

When you realise that it’s love that you’ve been seeking all along, you begin to understand that when you are more loving and compassionate with yourself, and let go of any heavy judgemental energies which shame you into not feeling worthy enough of the Divine’s love, the more you can open your heart to that love.

This is the core of it all and it all starts with you. Learning to love yourself is learning to love life, and once you do that you’ll find that you no longer need to push yourself to burnout, you can feel content on this earth, and you can lean back into the safety of love and all of the joy, wonder and awareness that comes with that.
